What is sensory play?

Sensory play is any play that stimulates the five senses!

Molly Silva here, founder of Momtivity. I am a former early childhood educator with a BA in Early Childhood Education (students with and without disabilities) and a current stay at home mom of two young boys. Not only did I study and work in a classroom setting for many years I also have 20 years of experience nannying for a vast variety of families. Coming from a family of crafty and creative people along with my background in education it was always very natural for me to bring sensory play into my parenting. When the pandemic hit in early 2020 I started sharing the activities I was doing with my boys while stuck at home. It started as a way to connect with the world we were missing but soon I realized how many families could benefit from these activities at home. From there Momtivity was born!

As the pandemic progressed and we were home for longer and longer I realized that not only were parents desperate for ways to keep their children busy but also that our youngest populations were missing some truly valuable opportunities to build necessary skills. Sensory play is incorporated in most high quality early childhood educational settings. Therefore, whether it’s because our children are home or because it’s a challenge to keep these activities in classrooms and COVID safe right now, there is a serious need for this type of play. Sensory play is important across all childhood development and learning. From birth we start to take in and learn from the world through our senses and young children especially, benefits greatly from highly sensory play. It physically helps development with things like fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and spatial and body awareness. It also greatly develops cognitive abilities. From early math skills like sorting, attributes, counting, and patterning, to imagination, language development, social skills, story telling, and so much more. Beyond all that it’s fun and most children naturally gravitate towards this kind of play. Bringing sensory play into our homes has never been more important and will always be beneficial!
